The World Health Organization has described Type 2 Diabetes as a global epidemic. By the year 2030 they estimate that the disease will be one of the biggest killers on the planet. Type 2 Diabetes currently affects almost half a billion people worldwide and is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.
In Egypt the International Diabetes Federation reported that there were 7.8 million people were affected by Type 2 Diabetes in 2015, and that it led to the deaths of approximately 80,000 Egyptians. The disease is largely caused by excess body weight and physical inactivity. However, it can be prevented by maintaining a healthy body weight, regular exercise, and eating a healthy diet.
Gold’s Gym is teaming up with the Rotary Club to raise awareness of this issue and will be running workshops featuring international experts at Gold’s Gym branches in Maadi, Katameya, Katameya Elite and Nile. Further fundraising events and educational initiatives are planned from August 2016.
Chief Operating Officer Nicole Robbins explained that ‘Type 2 Diabetes is preventable and mostly comes down to healthy diet and exercise. This is exactly what we promote. We have some of the most experienced personal trainers in the country who are able to provide individualized nutritional counselling and physiotherapy.’ Ms. Robbins added that ‘Gold’s Gym is the oldest gym brand in Egypt and we feel that we have a responsibility to the Egyptian community to raise awareness of this important issue.
