Bengtskär lighthouse, Finland sits on a small rocky island in the Baltic Sea. This is a REAL getaway. You can ferry there from Hanko, Rosala or Kasnas (weather permitting); or even helicopter to the island! This lighthouse was built in the early 20th century, after several ships were wrecked in the area. The sea there is very shallow and there are many uncharted rocks making it a difficult area to navigate. So granite from the island was quarried to build the 52-meter-high lighthouse. If you like, you can stay overnight in the converted lighthouse keeper quarters, with meals served in the café! Weather changes can be fast there, allowing you to experience the many moods of the sea. You get to experience the wildlife as you walk, and if you are there at the right time you can see hundreds of Eider ducks that nest on the island. There is also a small museum where you can learn about the history of the lighthouse. For everything you need to know about visiting the island: http://www.bengtskar.fi/english.htm
