IMG_5595The World Health Organization has described Type 2 Diabetes as a global epidemic. By the year 2030 they estimate that the disease will be one of the biggest killers on the planet. Type 2 Diabetes currently affects almost half a billion people worldwide and is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation.

In Egypt the International Diabetes Federation reported that there were 7.8 million people were affected by Type 2 Diabetes in 2015, and that it led to the deaths of approximately 80,000 Egyptians. The disease is largely caused by excess body weight and physical inactivity. However, it can be prevented by maintaining a healthy body weight, regular exercise, and eating a healthy diet.

Gold’s Gym is teaming up with the Rotary Club to raise awareness of this issue and will be running workshops featuring international experts at Gold’s Gym branches in Maadi, Katameya, Katameya Elite and Nile. Further fundraising events and educational initiatives are planned from August 2016.

Chief Operating Officer Nicole Robbins explained that ‘Type 2 Diabetes is preventable and mostly comes down to healthy diet and exercise. This is exactly what we promote. We have some of the most experienced personal trainers in the country who are able to provide individualized nutritional counselling and physiotherapy.’ Ms. Robbins added that ‘Gold’s Gym is the oldest gym brand in Egypt and we feel that we have a responsibility to the Egyptian community to raise awareness of this important issue. We are more than just a gym: we are a resource for knowledge and health related life skills. Health and fitness is about so much more than just lifting weights.’

The Rotary Club is an international organization, which has been affecting change on important community issues in Egypt since 1989, has a large network of supportive groups throughout Egypt and has been actively promoting healthier living in Egypt for many years. President of the Rotary Club in Egypt Mr. Sherif Barakat assured that, “It is indeed our pleasure to partner with Golds Gym in the Diabetes Awareness project. Golds Gym as a leading fitness and sports institute has been promoting healthy life style not just in Egypt but all over the world.

The Rotary club of 6th Oct Palm Hills will join forces with Golds Gym backed by all interested Rotarians and Rotary clubs in the fight against this disease that can cause blindness, deafness, failure of organs functions, and death. Diabetes can be easily avoided by healthy diet and simple exercises for which Golds Gym has the answer through their expert trainers and their professional nutritionists. We look forward for a long and strong partnership with Golds Gym to serve our communities and to better serve Humanity.”
